2.  Open an online store with Shopify

Ecommerce is a very popular way to make money.  With more people doing their shopping online than ever before, it’s a great time to jump on board!  You can sell on Amazon or Ebay but I recommend starting your own Shopify store.  You pay a flat fee for the website every month as opposed to a percentage of every sale.  I set up an online store with drop shippers so I have no inventory to keep up with and very little upfront cost.  I use Salehoo to locate drop shippers that I would like to work with.

You can also open an online store with Etsy if your specialty is handmade goods!  Here is an Etsy Business Planner to help with your planning and organization!

3. Transcriptionist

You listen to audio files and type out what you hear.  It’s a very simple job.  I recommend taking the free course provided by Transcribe Anywhere to get started.  Legal transcription is in very high demand right now.  It is recommended that you have a great set of noise cancelling headphones to be able to hear the audio more clearly.  These are my favorite because they are over-ear and block out all other noise.

4. Virtual Assistant

Self-employed virtual assistants are in very high demand because it saves on administrative employment costs.  You can get all of the training you need from Lisa Wells at Virtual Assistant Training.  Another good educational resource is a book called The Bootstrap VA.  Some typical duties that virtual assistants are asked to handle would include replying to emails, data entry, calendar and appointment management.  I recommend registering with Fiverr as it is a well known platform for individuals to list their services and employers to look for self-employed workers.  Having a blog where you can advertise your services can also be great exposure.

5.  Take Surveys

The pay usually depends on how long the survey takes you to complete.  They can range anywhere from .25 to $75 for focus groups.  The average is usually more like $2 to $10 but if you can do 5 per hour that’s a pretty good hourly rate!  Personally, my favorite companies (in order) are SurveyRewardz, Pinecone Research, and MySurvey.

Never pay a membership fee to join a survey site!

If you enjoy giving your opinions to make money you should register for as many survey companies as possible to increase your chances of being eligible for surveys.  There are people that sign up for so many companies that they are able to make a legitimate career out of taking surveys.  Check out this post for a list of more survey companies you can register with.

6.  Test Websites

Register with websites like UserTesting.com and Userlytics.com to become a website tester.  Online companies will pay you $10 – $15 to complete a 15 – 20 minute test.  Your job is to follow the set of instructions provided by the company and give your thoughts as you navigate their site.  Is it user friendly?  Is it frustrating to find something they are telling you to click on.  They want you to speak your thoughts out loud as you follow their instructions.

You may be required to have a webcam and microphone.  Most laptops have these but if you need to purchase them they are very inexpensive.  Here is a great microphone and webcam option.

7.  YouTube

If you create videos with information that people need or want then you can monetize your YouTube channel.  You have to have at least 10,000 views before YouTube will review your website and see if it is eligible to place ads on.  You will want to make sure you have a microphone and webcam to produce quality videos.

8.  Direct Sales

Think companies like Avon and Tupperware.  People either love or hate the direct sales approach.  There is rarely a happy medium but the simple fact is that they have been around a very long time and people can be very successful at it.  Typically the commission that you get is around 25% but it can go up depending on the amount of sales you have.  Some companies have a small fee to get started.  I did direct sales when our daughter was born and I went with Avon because of the very low $10 startup fee.

I sold so much Avon that I received 40% commission as well as 50% off of all products.  I bought all of our hand soap, body wash and lotions.  It really helped us save money when we were a one income family.

Now there are direct sales companies for almost any interest.  LulaRoe is available for clothing, Paparazzi focuses on jewelry, Young Living for essential oils, Pampered Chef for kitchen supplies and Scentsy for candles.  You can definitely find something you would like to sell and the internet makes it easier than ever.  Long gone are the days of having to host parties that no one really wanted to attend but felt obligated to because they were your family and friends!

Here is an awesome direct sales planner to help organize all of your clients and orders!

9.  Virtual Tutor

If you have a degree in teaching you could work online for Tutor, Wyzant, or Sylvan Learning.  These companies match teachers with students who need academic help.  You should expect a background check due to the fact that you could be working with children.  These meetings are usually done over the phone or through Skype and last anywhere from 30 minutes to 1 hour.  Average pay is about $20 per hour.  You will want to make sure you have a microphone and webcam to produce quality video for the student.

10. Teach School Online

Just like with virtual tutoring, you can expect a background check because you will be working with children.  You may be required to provide a teaching license.  You will either prerecord lessons or teach students live through Skype.  You will want to make sure you have a microphone and webcam to produce quality videos for this as well.  Check with companies like K12.com for employment opportunities.

11.  English Teacher for Corporations

Companies like VIPKid and goFLUENT pay native English speakers to practice English with students in foreign countries.  There are many large corporations who pay these companies so there employees can learn better conversational skills and be able to conduct meetings.  Due to this being a job needed for corporations there are usually a minimum number of hours required per week.  These practice sessions are conducted over the phone or through Skype.  You will need to have a microphone and webcam to produce quality videos for this as well.

12.  Customer Service Representative

Many companies now hire independent contractors to work from home as customer service representatives.  It saves on employment costs.  There are companies that offer part-time and full-time positions.  The job requires you to be friendly and patient with customers as well as having a good basic knowledge of computers.

Companies such as VIPdesk, Convergys, and Arise are staffing agencies that hire for this type of position.  I don’t recommend applying for any that require a fee unless it is specifically for a background check.

13. Search Engine Evaluator

Companies like Leapforce at Home, Lionbridge, and Appen represent corporations like Google and Yahoo! who want someone to evaluate the accuracy of their search engine.  They do this by hiring individuals to perform a search task and evaluate the results.  Are they what you were looking for or did they bring back a result that was completely irrelevant to your search?

14.  Freelance Writing

Websites are always looking for great quality freelance writers.  You can advertise yourself on networks like Fiverr and Upwork.  CyberEdit, Inc. hires freelancers as well and specializes in professional resume writing as well as technical writing and text editing.

15.  Graphic Design

Everything seems to be dependent on computers and graphic design is the perfect field to be in for that.  You can create logos, flyers, catalogs, advertisements, etc.  The options are endless!  Fiverr is a great platform to advertise your work.  Etsy is a great place to open a shop and sell printables.  You can also market your services directly to ad agencies and publishing companies.

16.  Proofreading & Editing

Companies such as Edit Fast and Cactus hire freelancers for various proofreading and editing jobs.   Book in a Box hires for these positions as well as occasionally needing book jacket designers.

17.  Complete online tasks

Clickworker and CrowdFlower pay individuals to complete short online tasks such as collecting data, translating, content creation and surveys.

18.  Become a Virtual Nurse

If you have a nursing degree and would like to work from home there are options!  Carenet hires registered nurses for telephone triage while major insurance companies hire nurses to perform duties like treatment authorization and case management from home.  You can find listings for these jobs on sites like UpWork.

19.  Stylist

Are you in love with fashion?  If so, Stitch Fix will pay you to be a work at home stylist and provide fashion tips to clients on their website.  You are required to be at least 18 years of age and able to attend their off-site training.  After that you are working from home doing something you love and are passionate about!

20.  Social Media Manager

As a social media manager you would be responsible for your clients social media accounts.  You would share their information and create posts on their behalf.  You can market your services on websites like Fiverr and Upwork.  You would manage your clients social media accounts in an effort to bring them more traffic and sales.

21.  Translator

If you are bilingual there are many opportunities to work from home.  Call centers, search engine evaluators and corporations are just a few of the options!  You can apply with companies like Rosetta Stone, Apple At-Home Advisors and Aberdeen.

Do you know of any other excellent opportunities that you think I should include?

  1. I used to be obsessed with finding ways to make money online and I burnt myself out signing up for all these survey companies that never made me any money. I’m focusing my efforts on transitioning into a freelance writer, so I think that’s how I want to eventually make the majority of my income. Have you tried all of these jobs before?

    1. I haven’t tried them all but I have tried several. I did surveys basically full time when our daughter was born and did better than I expected but didn’t want it to be a career. I recently started blogging and it has been the most lucrative by far!

      1. Id love some tips on blogging especially so that I can work from home and leave a 9-5 stressful job to be more with my family.
