If you were to ask your daughter what she’s grateful for in the present moment, would she have an answer ready to give you? An answer other than her family, friends and phone? Wouldn’t it be great if she could easily recall the small moments in her day that brought her the most joy?
The simple habit of reflecting on what she’s grateful for can actually lead her to a happier, more content life. Encourage her to spend a few moments of her time with a gratitude journal recording her thoughts. Gratitude journals are a lot like the diaries that we kept as a teenager, but instead of writing random thoughts about your day, now there are guided journals and writing prompts to help them write meaningful content.

- Reduce Stress – Middle school and high school can be incredibly stressful for teenage girls. Thinking about the peer pressure and cliques alone make me grateful that I graduated almost two decades ago! It is a proven fact that stress can be detrimental to your physical, mental and emotional health. Writing about these stressful experiences can help them learn to manage stress in a healthy way.
- Boost Your Mood – Writing in a journal can improve your mood by providing a greater sense of emotional well-being and happiness.
- Improve Memory – When writing things down you pay more attention to what you are writing as opposed to typing on a laptop to transcribe notes. You naturally rank information according to importance therefore allowing you to learn and recall information more readily.
- Creative Expression – Use your journal as a safe place for all of your creative project ideas. You can brainstorm and work out the details. Striking through things that are no longer relevant but leaving them there just in case. On a computer you would delete these and never get to reconsider them in the future whereas a journal is more like a brain dump that can be referenced over and over.
- Improved Success – If you write down goals you are more likely to achieve them. Journaling about your goals provides clarity about what you actually want to accomplish. It encourages you to think about why you want it and how to get it. You can then use this to plan the actual steps you need to take to make your goal a reality.

Journals for Teenage Girls
I created the Daily Gratitude Journal below specifically for my 14 year old daughter. It includes coloring pages, inspirational quotes, daily affirmations, pages for notes and more. She loved writing in it so much that I decided to publish it so other moms could use it to help their daughters. You can get this specific one here!
