7 Ways to Cozy Up Your Home for Winter

I don’t know about you but winter was always a downer for me.  It was easily my least favorite time of the year.  I grew up on a lake and lived for the summer.  When it would start getting dark around 6:00 pm, I would begin to feel like I was cooped up in a dark dreary house.

Something about becoming an adult has made it easier for me to cope with!  I think it has to do with the fact that I can decorate my own house and make it more cozy!  Also, now that I’m getting older the hot summer months aren’t nearly as much fun…

How to Cozy Up Your Home for Winter

Once you pack up all of the Christmas decorations does your house look empty?  For me, staying excited about winter once all of the excitement of the holidays is over can be hard.  I like to decorate with bright winter whites, silvers, neutral colors and natural elements to help lighten the room and my mood.

Here are 7 ways to make home a place you love to be stuck during the snowstorms and dreary weather that comes with winter!

1. Lanterns

Lanterns are a very good way to lift your spirits when inside a dark and dreary home.  It gives off extra light while giving the feel of rustic elegance.  They look great on a sofa table or coffee table in the living room but they are so versatile that you can move them all around the house!  Put them in the bathroom for soaking in the tub or on a table in the foyer to greet guests.

2. Blankets

If you’re like me, blankets make everything better!  When it gets dark so early in the evening, it seems like there isn’t much to do.  Curling up in a blanket with a book is a perfect way to get cozy and keep yourself entertained until the sun comes up again!  Adding in some big soft throw pillows doesn’t hurt either!

3. Scented Stove Top Simmer Recipes

Wouldn’t you love to smell the inviting scent of lemons and oranges simmering on the stove top?  This is such a great way to make a home feel more welcoming and enjoyable.  It’s also makes a great impression if someone drops by unannounced!  Khrista over at EzeBreezy has 12 different recipes that are great for every season!

4. Fireplaces

Fireplaces are the epitome of cozy!  If your home doesn’t have a fireplace that’s ok, you can purchase an electric one.  I know what you’re thinking…that isn’t the same.  You are absolutely correct but it is very close!  They heat the area, they have lifelike flames to make them look real and some even make the crackling noises!

5. Draft Stoppers

If your home doesn’t have new doors and windows with improved seal then you could be getting a draft coming in around the edges and underneath.  Draft stoppers are designed exactly for this!  You lay them up against the bottom of a door or window and they stop the cold air from coming inside helping your home stay warm and cozy!  You can buy these several places but my favorite is Etsy because you can choose your fabric to match your decor or if you’re super crafty you can buy a pattern and make your own!

6. Hot Tea and Coffee

I’m not sure this is as much for the home as it is for your body but I think hot tea and coffee definitely deserve a spot on the list.  I think most people correlate warm beverages with cool weather, and why wouldn’t they!  They warm you up from the inside out making them the perfect go to beverage for cold winter days.  I’m a coffee girl myself but if you love tea (or are ready to give it a try) Nordstrom has an Assorted Tea Infuser Chest with 20 different blends!

7. Table Decor

Just because the holidays are over does not mean that you have to completely give up on your table decor!  When we are finished with our dining room for the season I decorate our table in the eat-in kitchen.  I recently came across this photo from Elizabeth Anne Designs and fell in love!  It is definitely the look I am going for this winter!

The wood slice charger plates are the perfect mix of rustic and elegant!  The candles help lighten the area and the white dishes reflect light coming in the windows.

I hope these ideas have given you a little inspiration for your winter decor this year!

As much as I love all of these things I can’t wait until it is time to decorate for spring!
